JOB PROFILE FOR PDRC COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

ROLE PURPOSE:  

PDRC implements a variety of programs/ projects that relate to peacebuilding and state building, security and social reconciliation, support for the democratization process at Puntland and federal levels and advocacy for human rights. The Communications Officer is responsible for meeting the information and communication needs of PDRC interventions in Puntland and Somalia, including increasing and/or standardizing visibility and ensuring consistent program communications.

The function will ensure the collection, sharing of information and communication products including strips, case studies, visual content in the form of pictures, videos and/or audio materials, web content and program success stories. The function will also connect PDRC with external stakeholders, actors, donors, local communities, and international Somali communities by sustaining and regularly feeding PDRC’s strengths and positive contributions to the rebuilding of Somalia and, subsequently, managing public/donor/actor/community feedback by sharing and distributing information with relevant PDRC departments or personnel for appropriate action or response. The function involves extensive application of modern communications tools and facilities including, and not limited to, Facebook, Twitter, Website, YouTube, local radios, and other available means.

In close cooperation with the management team, the function will ensure compliance with PDRC’s communication standards and protocols in relation to external and internal communication. These are embedded in PDRC’s core values and principles of political neutrality and respect for the law and human dignity.

SCOPE OF ROLE:

Reports to: Program Coordinator

Dimensions: Works in all regions of Puntland and can extend to other regions beyond Puntland.

PRIMARY KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

●      Support the identification, and development, of communication materials to support the achievement of program and advocacy objectives in line with PDRC’s outreach and public relations strategies.

●      Lead in the compilation, design, and dissemination of information and communication material on PDRC programs in close cooperation with the Program and Management teams.

●      Keep abreast of program-level developments and track communication opportunities within these and further identify and maximize opportunities to raise the visibility and profile of PDRC projects, interventions and programs whether funded internally (PDRC) or by external donors.

●      Maintain and regularly update PDRC’s social media platforms including, but not limited to, Facebook, Twitter, Website, and YouTube.

●      Liaise with PDRC’s Audio-Visual Unit (AVU) and Mobile Audio-Visual Unit (MAVU) to coordinate with activities on the ground – visual, audio, pictures and written content (all with due consent). This function also includes development of quality visual products, whether held in archives or freshly compiled, for dissemination and online outreach purposes.

 

ADDITIONAL ADVANTAGE

●      Design PDRC reports, publications and articles using state-of-the-art applications (Graphic Design Software, preferably Adobe)

●      Basic editing of picture/video for online dissemination

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

●      Degree in Mass Media, Journalism, or requisite experience

●      At least 5 years of proven experience in communications work

●      Excellent writing and oral skills in English and Somali languages

●      Knowledge of publishing, printing, and publishing applications

●      Excellent communication skills and ability to work as a member of team

●      Excellent time management, organizational abilities, and proven capacity to work to deadlines under pressure

●      Knowledge and willingness to adhere to PDRC’s core values and policies

●      Willing and able to travel to all over Somalia.
