Garowe (25th -November-2014): Puntland President Abdiweli Mahamed Ali (Gaas) hosted a delegation from Interpeace, Conflict Dynamics International (CDI), and the Puntland Development Research Center (PDRC) at the Puntland Presidential Palace in Garowe, the capital of Puntland State of Somalia.
Mr. Ulf Terlinden -head of the Interpeace Somali program- headed the delegation to discuss issues concerning the reactivation of the democratization process in Puntland State, Somalia.
Talks with the president focused on preparations for a major public consultation process scheduled to happen in Garowe, sometime in the coming few months. The consultative process is planned to feature a cross sectional representation of the Puntland society. Notable participants expected to attend will include traditional elders, Political Figures, Civil Society Organization, Intellectuals, religious leaders, members from Diaspora amongst others.
The president confirmed his administration’s continued commitment to fulfilling the pledges made to the people of Puntland. He reiterated the government’s commitment to conducting public consultation and introducing Multi-party politics as precursors for the maturation of a broad based democratic system in Puntland.
Speaking on behalf of Interpeace Somalia, Mr. Terlinden pledged the organization’s continued commitment to support the upcoming democratization process in Puntland State, Somalia.
For almost 2 decades, Interpeace – an international peacebuilding alliance – has supported successful reconciliation, social integration, and democratization programs through its local partners in Somalia.
